Laboratory for the Study of Monotheisms - LEM, UMR 8584

The LEM is a structure welcoming CNRS researchers and professors from EPHE-PSL, Sorbonne University and Jean-Monnet University of Saint-Étienne, and which is united around the scientific, historical and critical study of religious texts and traditions gathered under the name of "monotheisms" and which flourished mainly in the Mediterranean basin and in Europe: Judaism, Islam, Christianity, but also religious dissidences (such as Gnosis and Manichaeism), and pagan monotheism. The uncovering of the different forms of rationality (religious, philosophical, scientific, etc.), and their confrontation, is at the heart of this research. While its temporal scope begins with the constitution of the great canons of Scripture and extends to their reception in the modern era, and even beyond, it is above all the methodology employed, based on textual criticism, that constitutes its distinctive feature.

This joint research unit (UMR 8584) is under the primary sponsorship of the École Pratique des Hautes Études, but also of the CNRS and Sorbonne University, and, secondarily, of the Jean-Monnet University of Saint-Étienne. The laboratory is based on the Condorcet Campus in Aubervilliers, with locations also in Paris and Saint-Étienne (CERCOR).
