Laboratories of Excellence

Research at the service of the Investments for the Future Program

Committed to the Investments for the Future Program, the EPHE-PSL is an institution with two LabEX programs: the LabEx Corail and the LabEx Hastec. These Laboratories of Excellence participate in the integrated policy of research, training and high-level development.

The Laboratories of Excellence (LabEx) have a threefold aim:

  • have international visibility;
  • attracting internationally renowned researchers and professors;
  • building an integrated policy of research, training and high level development.

LabEx Corail

While they cover only 0.02% of the ocean's surface, coral reefs bring together nearly 25% of the seas' biodiversity. This essential ecosystem is disappearing (20% of reefs have permanently disappeared and 25% are greatly endangered). Improving their sustainable management is urgent, relying on the integration of knowledge into their governance.
The "Coral reefs facing global change" LabEx brings this expertise to France, the French overseas territories and to the island countries of the Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean by uniting all the French overseas territories involved in coral reef research. It is managed by a board of directors and is supported by the EPHE (with 8 partner institutions: CNRS, EHESS, Ifremer, IRD, UAG, UNC, UPF, UR). It is integrated into PSL University.

The aim is to establish a French center of excellence for the study of coral reefs at the world’s highest scientific level in terms of impact factors thanks to a common signature of publications.

LabEx Hastec

The "History and Anthropology of Knowledge, Techniques and Beliefs"  LabEx is supported by the EPHE-PSL; with its multidisciplinary teams (history, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, musicology, arts, etc.), it analyzes, the historical correlation of knowledge, techniques and beliefs, from Antiquity to the twenty-first century. This research responds to emerging issues, thus placing the project at the heart of the current global debate.

Particular attention is paid to young researchers (PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) and to Digital Humanities.
