Famagouste-EPHE Collection
Our idea was to publish, in a popular scholarly form, the French version of texts of all kinds, coming from the most diverse cultures, in a form that would appeal to a broad audience, with a clear, high-level introduction and explanatory notes.
We translate a lot at the EPHE-PSL . Translating is an essential act, not only because it enables us to pass on the production of other cultures and other times, but also because translation requires us to weigh up our words and make choices between various possible interpretations and is a first and essential instrument of understanding and interpretation. It is through translation that we can strive to hear what the texts are really saying. Our students, our listeners and ourselves all practice this craft intensively. A few directors of studies have realized that there's a wealth of material here that we don't exploit enough: for example, many of the translations produced as part of our seminars or master's or thesis works are never published. This is how we came up with the idea of inserting a Famagouste-EPHE series into the Famagouste collection published by the Toulouse-based publisher Anacharsis. Our idea was to publish the French version of texts of all kinds, coming from the most diverse cultures, in a form that would appeal to a broad public, with a clear, high-level introduction and explanatory notes. The books appearing in the collection must be both enjoyable to read and meet the standards of good philological and historical work. Introductions and notes should be limited to the essentials but should shed light on the various aspects of the translated text. Our hope is that the volumes we produce will be both a showcase accessible to the public and genuine contributions to research.

The first two volumes (Les Faux-Monnayeurs d'Istanbul and Le Captif de Malte) have been published on the Anacharsis (Toulouse) website.
