The Unit brings together six teams:

• Pharaonic Worlds
• Semitic Worlds
• Classical and Late Antiquity
• Greek Medicine and Technical Literature
• Byzantine World
• Medieval Islam

Research focuses on the Near East, Arabia, Pharaonic Egypt, and the Mediterranean world across all humanities disciplines in the ancient and medieval periods. The Unit is also behind the ELASU program (Sorbonne University School of Ancient Languages), which teaches the broadest possible range of rare languages from Antiquity.
