À la rencontre d'un orientaliste chrétien : Paul Durand (1806-1882). L'art et la science archéologique au service de la foi.

Cette thèse explore l'œuvre de Paul Durand (1806-1882), médecin reconverti dans l'archéologie à partir des années 1830, qui œuvra au développement de la science archéologique, encore embryonnaire, et à la régénération de l'art chrétien dans les églises médiévales de l'Eure-et-Loir. À partir de sources en partie inédites (dessins, ébauches de manuscrits, lettres), il s'agira de définir son rôle dans la construction de la discipline archéologique et d'éclairer sa contribution à l'élaboration d'un art chrétien, deux domaines profondément nourris par sa foi chrétienne. Les travaux scientifiques et artistiques de Durand dévoilent en effet une vision critique et décadente de la société française du XIXe siècle. Ce regard s'inscrit dans le contexte postrévolutionnaire où certains catholiques éprouvent un sentiment d'abandon du religieux dans la société. Héritier d'une famille de la noblesse déchue et marqué par les destructions d'églises parisiennes pendant ses études, Durand déploie des mécanismes pour réintroduire le religieux dans la société de son temps. Dans le contexte romantique, il entreprend de redécouvrir les monuments du Moyen Âge des christianismes latins et orientaux. C'est dans l'Orient chrétien, et en particulier dans la Grèce byzantine, qu'il identifie des formes « pures » du christianisme et met au jour des clefs de lecture de l'iconographie chrétienne. Ces références constituent un véritable ferment créatif pour l'archéologue dans le cadre de ses restaurations dans les églises de la Beauce, notamment dans la crypte de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres.

Encountering a Christian Orientalist: Paul Durand (1806-1882). Art and Archaeological Science in the Service of Faith.

This thesis explores the work of Paul Durand (1806–1882), a physician who turned to archaeology from the 1830s onward, and who contributed to the development of the still embryonic science of archaeology, as well as to the regeneration of Christian art in the medieval churches of the Eure- et-Loir region. Using partially unpublished sources (drawings, manuscript drafts, letters), the aim is to define his role in the construction of the archaeological discipline and to shed light on his contribution to the elaboration of a Christian art, two domains deeply nourished by his Christian faith. Durand's scientific and artistic work reveals a critical and decadent vision of 19th-century French society. This perspective is rooted in the post-revolutionary context in which certain Catholics experienced a sense of abandonment of religion in society. As the heir to a fallen noble family and marked by the destruction of Parisian churches during his studies, Durand deployed mechanisms to reintroduce the religious into the society of his time. In the Romantic context, Durand undertook a rediscovery of the monuments of the Middle Ages from both Latin and Eastern Christian traditions. It is in the Christian East, and particularly in Byzantine Greece, that he identified “pure” forms of Christianity and uncovered interpretive keys to Christian iconography. These references constituted a genuine creative ferment for the archaeologist in the context of his restoration work in the churches of the Beauce region, notably in the crypt of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Chartres.
