Archaeology and Philology of the East and West - AOROC, UMR 8546
Joint Research Unit 8546, AOROC "Archaeology and Philology of the East and West," is a joint laboratory of the CNRS and the ENS, in partnership with the EPHE-PSL.
It is the result of the merger of six CNRS archaeology teams, one philology team from the ENS, one Egyptology team, and one digital humanities team from the EPHE-PSL.
It studies the societies, languages, and cultures of Antiquity by combining archaeological, numismatic, philological, linguistic, and historical approaches. Particular attention is paid to the phenomena of cultural transfer between classical civilizations and so-called peripheral cultures, from recent protohistory to the early Middle Ages.
