Being a Child of Immigrants and a Committed Muslim in Northern Italy: Sociology of a Process of Integration
This thesis offers a sociological analysis of an integration process through the trajectories of young adults from Muslim immigrant backgrounds in four cities in northern Italy. In a country with a relatively recent history of immigration and no consolidated national model of integration, it examines how being both the child of immigrants and an engaged Muslim shapes educational, professional and civic trajectories, as well as the forms taken by Islam itself.
The study brings together the sociology of migration and the sociology of religion, drawing in particular on segmented assimilation theory, research on minority social capital and post-secular approaches to citizenship. It is based on substantial qualitative material: 93 biographical interviews with young people born or socialised in Italy, 15 interviews with imams and association leaders, complemented by ethnographic research in mosques and Islamic associations in four northern Italian cities.
The findings first show that religion is one element among others in these trajectories, rather than a homogeneous force. Between a mosaic Islam—made up of inherited, fragmented and weakly institutionalised norms—and a reformulated Islam—neo-orthodox, reflexive and contextualised—there emerges a religion of choice, marked by the individualisation of faith, internal pluralisation and the deinstitutionalisation of frameworks of socialisation. The Islam of the second generation thus appears comparable to other monotheistic religions in secularised contexts, without any “Islamic exceptionalism”, although it develops under the specific conditions of a double religious and migratory minority status.
The thesis then highlights a process of ethnogenesis and the production of a post-migrant, Italian and European Islam. The distinction between the “culture of the parents” and “true religion”, the rise of an Islam “from below” through associational networks, peer groups and digital spaces, and the doctrinal bricolage observed all contribute to the emergence of a minority fiqh attentive to the concrete constraints of life in Italy.
Finally, the study shows that mosques and youth associations, attended by a minority experiencing upward social mobility, function as a form of middle-class minority social capital, linking self-discipline, educational success and civic engagement. Far from being merely places of separation, they can, in certain local configurations, become resources for integration and channels of participation in a post-secular public sphere. The Islam of young Italian Muslims thus emerges as a laboratory for observing contemporary reconfigurations between religion, migration and citizenship in Europe.
