Anthropology and history of the ancient worlds - ANHIMA, UMR 8210

UMR 8210 ANHIMA, created in 2010 from the merger of three research centers and teams (Centre Louis Gernet, Centre Gustave Glotz, Phéacie team, plus the Année épigraphique in 2014), is characterized by its historical anthropology approach applied to the study of ancient worlds.

Its research programs are grouped into four axes, where more than sixty permanent professors and researchers and as many doctoral students from its five supervisory bodies (CNRS / EPHE-PSL / EHESS / Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne / Université Paris Cité) and other institutions (Collège de France, Université d'Evry) cooperate: 1) Religious dynamics of ancient worlds; 2) Law, Institutions, Societies; 3) Identities, practices and representations; 4) Corpus and constitutions of knowledge, archaeology. These fields of inquiry cover not only all the societies of the ancient Mediterranean, from Greece to Rome, from the Maghreb to Gaul, but also Mesopotamia and ancient India. The research conducted in the laboratory combines the technical expertise of firsthand work on ancient documents with broader theoretical questions, open to the social sciences and comparative studies, in order to understand the cultures studied in their own logic and cultural specificity.

The Unit promotes a sustained publication program and directly manages the Gernet-Glotz Library, one of the most important French libraries in the field of Ancient Sciences, whose scientific importance was recently recognized by the award of the CollEx (Collection of Excellence) label.
