Viral infections and comparative pathology - IVPC, UMR754

UMR 754 "Viral Infections and Comparative Pathology" (IVPC) is a joint research unit under the supervision of EPHE-PSL, INRAE and the University of Lyon 1.

The projects developed in the unit focus on emerging or endemic infectious diseases, zoonotic or animal, in particular those caused by arboviruses (viruses transmitted by arthropod vectors), respiratory viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and retroviruses (oncogenic β-retroviruses). These programs are part of a "One Health" approach which considers that human health and animal health are interdependent and linked to the ecosystems in which they coexist. The research objectives are to better understand the infectious process, to identify the determinants of pathogenicity and transmission in host species, not only in mammals (humans, animals), but also in arthropod vectors (mosquitoes, sandflies and ticks). In addition, diagnostic tools and antiviral strategies are developed. The approaches developed use cellular and molecular biology methods, imaging, based on in vitro (2D, 3D, organoids), in insecto (e.g., mosquito) and in vivo models.

In addition, the unit actively interacts with stakeholders in the socio-economic world (decision support), as well as citizens (participatory science) and contributes to raising awareness of science among young people.
