Papyrus

Papyri Collections

The EPHE-PSL has two papyri collections: the Graux collection and the Weill collection. To facilitate consultation and for the sake of conservation, these two remarkable collections, a large part of which has not yet been published, are on long-term deposit at the Institute of Papyrology of the Sorbonne. These two collections are the property of the EPHE-PSL.

The "Graux Fund"

A heritage collection of Greek philology which concerns more broadly the Greco-Roman and Byzantine sources

Most of these fragments date from the Roman period, although the Byzantine period is also well represented. With rare exceptions, these are only documentary texts.
Another overwhelming majority emerged: that of texts written in Greek. For the remaining fifteen or so texts, we find Coptic (in the Id, II and III series) and Arabic (often in bilingual Greek-Arabic texts).

The "Weill Fund"

The collection assembled by R. Weill includes mainly Greek papyri, but also a very important part of Coptic and a not-insignificant part in Arabic. The first batch (1909-1910) seems to have come entirely from the Antonopoulos region. Most of the texts are documentary.
