Oceanic and Continental Environments and Paleoenvironments - EPOC, UMR 5805

EPOC (Oceanic and Continental Environments and Paleoenvironments) is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) attached to the CNRS, the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux INP and the École Pratique des Hautes Études - PSL, which brings together 165 permanent staff (76 university lecturers and professors, 20 researchers and 69 engineers, technicians and administrative staff) and 97 non-permanent staff (35 engineers, technicians and administrative staff, 42 doctoral students and 20 post-doctoral fellows).

EPOC develops interdisciplinary research based on strong expertise in ecotoxicology, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, sedimentology, paleoclimatology, oceanography and geosciences to understand and predict the impacts of global changes and climate change on different ecosystems in the environment. In addition to their research activities, EPOC staff oversees a rich and multidisciplinary teaching program in the field of environmental sciences, combining chemistry, ecology, physics, geosciences, ecotoxicology, and more, from undergraduate to Master's degrees at the university level, as well as through various engineering and BUT (university technology bachelor's degree) programs. EPOC welcomes an average of 83 interns of all levels and backgrounds each year.

The research teams are:

  • Aquatic Ecotoxicology
  • Ecology and Biogeochemistry of Coastal Systems
  • Sedimentary Geology
  • The Physical and Toxic Chemistry of the Environment Team
  • Experimental Modeling and Remote Sensing in Sedimentary Hydrodynamics
  • Paleoclimates
  • Soil and Groundwater Observation and Modeling Processes
  • Geochemical Transfer of Metals at the Continent-Ocean Interface
