Foreign Modern Language Courses
The École Pratique des Hautes Études – PSL has established teaching of modern foreign languages (MFL) tailored to the training of its students to promote their professional integration and international outreach.
The language teaching provision offered by EPHE-PSL is aligned with the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe.
COURSES PROVIDED BY EPHE-PSL
English courses are offered from level B1, with free access to the Global Exam self-study platform.
Master's
Students enrolled in the Master's in Art History and Archaeology, Asian Studies, Civilisations, Cultures and Societies, and Religious Studies and Societies choose, in consultation with their academic tutor, the language that best suits their study project.
Those who choose English will be divided into groups at levels B1-B2 or C1-C2, according to the following dates and times:
English for Academic and Scientific Purposes, Level B1-B2: Threshold to Advanced Levels:
Fridays, from 17 October 2025 to 5 June 2026 - From 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
English for Academic and Scientific Purposes, Level B2-C1: Independent to Advanced Levels:
Wednesdays, from 17 October 2025 to 4 February 2026 - From 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (first semester).
Tuesdays, from 10 February 2026 to 6 June 2026 - From 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (second semester).

Enrolments are made via the Pegasus Portal, during the pedagogical enrolment campaigns (end of October and January).
Use of the Global Exam platform is optional and does not require enrolment with the registry. Global Exam is available from the Moodle of the PSL University Language Centre.
Students administratively enrolled in the Master's in Life Sciences are pedagogically enrolled in the specific intensive English modules provided in their program.
Enrolment is mandatory and is done via the Pegasus Portal during the pedagogical enrolment campaigns (end of June and end of November). The Global Exam platform is used here as part of the English teaching.
Doctorate
The Graduate Program in Sciences Religious (PG SR) offers doctoral students specialised English training for academic purposes in HSS in the form of writing and oral expression workshops.
Specialised English in HSS for Academic Purposes – Level B2-C1
Group 1: Tuesdays, from 14 October 2025 to 16 June 2026* - From 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Group 2: Wednesdays, from 15 October 2025 to 17 June 2026* - From 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Enrolment is done via the Adum Portal. As part of the doctoral program, these courses lead to the award of ECTS credits.
Institutional Diplomas
Semester courses of Modern Foreign Languages are open to students of the institution's diplomas, subject to availability. These courses do not lead to the award of ECTS credits.
COURSES PROVIDED BY THE PSL UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTRE
Modern Foreign Languages Taught and Courses Offered
11 languages offered: German, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (from Brazil), Russian, and Swedish.
Level groups: from A1 (beginner) to C1 (experienced).
55 course slots offered each week (splitting and adjustments may be made following enrolments, according to demand).
Location, Times, Calendar & Hourly Volume
Courses take place from Monday to Friday from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, at 60 boulevard Saint-Michel, 75006 Paris (École des Mines de Paris).
Each course is organised in 16 weekly sessions of 1.5 hours per semester (24 hours/semester).
1st semester: from 29 September 2025 to 26 January 2026
2nd semester: from 09 February 2026 to the beginning of June 2026 according to the calendar specific to each group formed.
Important: In semester 2, A1 level courses are not offered to absolute beginners.
Assessment
Assessment will be continuous (marks for homework or tests and appreciation of work done, progress, and participation) and will result in a mark out of 20. Each course will have its Moodle space and will rely on the support of the PSL University Pedagogical Innovation Centre.
Semester Enrolment
1st semester: enrolments open from 25 August to 17 September 2025 (with final groups stabilised on 24 September 2025).
2nd semester: enrolments open from 15 to 27 January 2026 (with final groups stabilised on 04 February 2026).

Important: Courses are freely accessible subject to availability. Priority is given to Master's students for whom language training is mandatory.
COURSES PROVIDED BY INALCO
EPHE-PSL is a signatory to a pedagogical cooperation agreement with the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), which allows Master's students from the School to follow the language courses offered by INALCO. Note that the civilisation courses in the Japanese Master's are open to EPHE-PSL students.
Enrolment as a Minor
From September, you can enrol directly with INALCO, with the prior agreement of your tutor and the Master's coordinator. The procedure is as follows:

During the summer closure from 25 July to 21 August, applications are not possible.
To enrol as a minor for the second semester 2025/2026, you must send the same file to inscriptions@inalco.fr from 5 to 16 January 2026 (final deadline).
